‘Juno’ Review

I was 19 years old when this movie came out, and I loved it. I loved it so much that I ignored everything that wasn’t great about it. This rewatch was very eye-opening for me. I completely overlooked the fact that a 16-year-old gets pregnant and decides to have an abortion without telling her parents. Her parents don’t even appear until 15 minutes into the movie. I completely overlooked the fact that Jason Bateman plays a creepy perv who thinks leaving his wife for a 16-year-old is a brilliant idea. No, Bateman. No.

So, what was so good about this movie that I overlooked the terrible things 18 years ago? Firstly, the writing is amazing! This is such a witty and quotable movie. I’ll give you a few.

‘Gees, Banana, shut your freakin’ gob!’

‘That ain’t no etch-o-sketch. This is one doodle that can’t be undid, homeskillet.’

‘Phuket Thailand!’

‘I never realize how much I like being home unless I’ve been somewhere else for a while’

‘The right person is still gonna think the sun shines out your ass’

‘Thundercats are go!’

And so many more! Cheers, Diablo Cody! I will be watching more of your movies! Secondly, the characters are all so relatable, except for Jason Bateman. This is such a human movie, and I love it. And all of the actors and actresses were perfect in their roles. I’m not sure what that says about Jason Bateman, but we’re gonna go with super talented. The saddest part for me is that I remember feeling sorry for him when I watched the movie 18 years ago. How dare his wife not let him be his cool self? How dare she give him a small corner of a huge house for his stuff? Now, watching it, I feel sad for both of them, but I lean more towards Jennifer Garner, who plays Bateman’s wife. Maybe because I am a wife now? I don’t know.

Thirdly, the soundtrack is to die for! It is probably my favorite movie soundtrack! I remember downloading it from iTunes and listening to it on my iPod all the time. It is so good! I get all of the feels from it. Well done, Music Department!

All in all, I still love this movie. It ranks very high for me, and it will always be one of my top choices. 8/10*

*Let’s be clear. I am in NO WAY condoning, teen pregnancy, abortion (murder), or trans rights. Although, Page was 27 when they came out, so that’s their own business as an adult with full autonomy over their life.
